Die Dallas Cowboys und Head Coach Mike McCarthy trennen sich jetzt doch - und lassen nur Verlierer zurück. Jerry Jones macht erneut keine gute Figur und sollte seinerseits endlich Konsequenzen ziehen. Ein Kommentar.

Jetzt dann also doch. Die Dallas Cowboys und Head Coach Mike McCarthy beenden ihre Zusammenarbeit. Berichten zufolge scheiterte eine Vertragsverlängerung an unterschiedlichen Vorstellungen über die Vertragslaufzeit.
Ganz gleich, ob man die Trennung an sich nun für richtig oder falsch hält, bestätigen die chaotische Art und Weise sowie die Umstände einmal mehr, dass General Manager Jerry Jones längst eher Fluch als Segen für seine eigene Franchise ist.
Eine Woche ist der Black Monday bereits vorbei. Während andere Teams schnell und konsequent ihre Entscheidungen getroffen haben und Gespräche mit potenziellen neuen Head Coaches führen, verschwendete Jones wertvolle Zeit.
Nun ist es nicht verwerflich, sich nach Saisonende einmal hinzusetzen und zu besprechen, wie die Spielzeit gelaufen ist, wo die Probleme lagen und ob man mit Blick auf die Zukunft einen gemeinsamen Nenner findet.
Dass man während dieser Gespräche aber offenbar nicht einmal über die mögliche Länge dieser künftigen Zusammenarbeit gesprochen hat, sondern die Verhandlungen erst Tage später scheitern, ist eigentlich ein Unding.
Das Wichtigste in Kürze
Denn so stehen alle Beteiligten als Verlierer da. Auch McCarthy selbst, der jetzt zwar auf dem Markt ist, aber sehr spät dran ist, um noch einen der freien Plätze zu bekommen. Zu weit fortgeschritten sind die Pläne bei den verschiedenen Teams.
Jerry Jones ist eine Belastung für die Dallas Cowboys
Die Chicago Bears und die New Orleans Saints sollen zwar interessiert sein, gerade die Bears wollten aber schon vor Tagen mit McCarthy sprechen. Jones jedoch verweigerte die Erlaubnis - eine von vielen Entscheidungen, die Kopfschütteln auslösen.
Und die doch perfekt in einen Führungsstil passt, der jegliche tiefgreifende Strategie und Vision vermissen lässt.
Schon in den vergangenen Monaten wurden die Vertragsverlängerungen von Dak Prescott und CeeDee Lamb zu melodramatischen Aufführungen - nur, um am Ende doch gigantische Summen zu zahlen, die wohl auch deshalb so hoch ausfielen, weil Jones sich selbst in die Ecke getrieben hat.
Lamb trainierte erst unmittelbar vor Saisonstart überhaupt wieder mit, nachdem er im Zuge der Verhandlungen lange in den Streik getreten war. Entsprechend wirkte der Receiver in den ersten Wochen der Saison nicht fit.

Die Trainer-Legende habe demnach großes Interesse gehabt, es habe jedoch vonseiten Jones' keinerlei Hinweise gegeben, dass der Posten überhaupt frei werden würde. Nur deshalb unterschrieb Belichick am College von North Carolina.
Sollte das stimmen, zeigt das einmal mehr die mangelnde Weitsicht des General Managers, der zugleich Besitzer der Franchise ist und in seiner Allmacht immer mehr überfordert zu sein scheint. Welchen Head Coach will Jones so spät noch holen? Und vor allem: Welcher Coach tut sich diese Umstände an?
Was die Cowboys jetzt bräuchten, wäre ein kompletter Neustart. Und das heißt auch: einen neuen GM, der einen klaren Plan für die Zukunft hat, der frischen Wind in die Franchise einbringt. Und der "America's Team" tatsächlich wieder zu einem Aushängeschild macht.
Jones ist dafür nicht der richtige - doch der 82-Jährige will das anscheinend nicht akzeptieren. Ein Rücktritt als GM komme für ihn nicht infrage, machte er zuletzt deutlich und schwelgte in Erinnerungen, warum er das Team damals gekauft habe. Die Antwort: Weil er genau das für den Rest seines Lebens machen wollte; entscheiden, wofür Geld ausgegeben wird.
Für die vielen Fans der Cowboys sind das keine guten Nachrichten. Jones ist dabei, sein Lebenswerk zu zerstören. Wenn er seine Franchise liebt, macht er Platz. Ansonsten drohen weitere schlimme Jahre mit noch schlimmeren Entscheidungen.
