NFL - LA Chargers: "Social Media Quarterback"? Justin Herbert bestätigt seine Kritiker

Justin Herbert erwischt im Playoff-Spiel der Chargers bei den Texans einen grauenhaften Tag und bestätigt damit seine Kritiker.
Es gibt sie im Sport immer wieder. Horrorstatistiken. Statistiken, neben denen kein Sportler seinen eigenen Namen lesen will. Solche Horrorstatistiken produzierte Justin Herbert im Wild Card Game seiner Los Angeles Chargers gegen die Houston Texans – und das mehr als nur einmal.
Nur 14 seiner 32 Passversuche konnte der 26-Jährige bei der 12:32-Pleite bei einem Mispieler anbringen, gleich viermal landete einer seiner Pässe in den Händen des Gegners. Nie in seiner Karriere hatte Herbert zuvor vier Interceptions in nur einem Spiel hinnehmen müssen.

Doch damit nicht genug. In der Kategorie EPA, Expected Points Added, schlug sich der Spielmacher historisch schlecht. Dabei handelt es sich um die Differenz zwischen den erwarteten Punkten eines Teams vor und nach einem Spielzug.
Betrachtet man die 214 Quarterback-Leistungen in den vergangenen zehn Jahren, war nur einmal ein Signal Caller noch schlechter als Herbert: Brian Hoyer, als er 2015 mit den Houston Texans 0:30 gegen die Kansas City Chiefs verlor und dabei ebenfalls vier Interceptions warf.
Dazu kommt: Nie in der NFL-Geschichte hatte ein Quarterback (mindestens 200 Passversuche) in einem Playoff-Spiel mehr Interceptions geworfen, als zuvor in der gesamten regulären Spielzeit kumuliert. Dort waren es für Herbert nur drei.
Das Wichtigste in Kürze
Herbert selbst gab sich ob seiner Leistung selbstkritisch. "Ich habe das Team im Stich gelassen", wurde er auf der Website der Chargers zitiert.
Und weiter: "Man kann den Ball nicht einfach so weggeben und erwarten zu gewinnen. Ich habe das Team mit vier solcher Turnover in eine schwierige Lage gebracht. Unsere Defense war stark, sie haben einige Turnover erzielt und uns Chancen gegeben. Ich muss einfach besser sein."
Herbert als "Social Media Quarterback"
Von seinen Teamkollegen gab es nach der bitteren Pleite durchaus aufmunternde Worte. Offensive Tackle Rashawn Slater sagte beispielweise, Herbert sei der "beste Footballspieler, den ich je um sich hatte".
Gewiss, nicht für jede seiner vier Interceptions ist der Spielmacher zu 100 Prozent selbst verantwortlich. Der entstandene Eindruck aber bleibt.
Vor allem aber ist er eine lautstarke Bestätigung für all jene Kritiker, die Herbert in den vergangenen Jahren als "Social Media Quarterback" tituliert haben. Also einen Spielmacher, der zwar immer wieder für Spektakel sorgt, der aber wenig Zählbares zustande bringt.
Einer seiner größten Kritiker dabei ist Emmanuel Acho, seines Zeichens Analyst bei "Fox Sports". "Ich lag bei Justin Herbert niemals falsch. Ich war nur der Erste", formulierte er bei "X": "Ich habe nie gesagt, dass Justin Herbert schlecht ist, das ist er nicht. Ich habe nur gesagt, dass er überbewertet und übermäßig gelobt wurde. Beides war noch nie so offensichtlich wahr."

Justin Herbert hat in seiner Karriere zwei NFL-Playoffspiele bestritten, beide gingen nach hinten los. Wobei die Pleite gegen die Texans nicht im Ansatz an das Ausscheiden in den 2022er-Playoffs herankommt, als Herbert mit den Chargers gegen die Jacksonville Jaguars Mitte des zweiten Viertels bereits 27:0 führte, die Partie am Ende aber mit 30:31 verlor.
Dazu sei gesagt: Mit 273 Passing Yards, einem Touchdown und keiner Interception hatte er im Vergleich zum vergangenen Wochenende seinerzeit gegen die Jaguars kein schlechtes Spiel abgeliefert.
Doch was die Leistung von Herbert in beiden Spiele vereint: Er verschwand jeweils in der zweiten Hälfte von der Bildfläche.
Fünf Jahre NFL mit einer Bilanz von 0-2 in der Postseason. Um Kritiker zum Schweigen zu bringen, dürften in Zukunft wohl nur Siege helfen. Und das Ausbleiben sämtlicher Horrorstatistiken.
